WAI

- New Zealand

Passionate ambassadors of the Maori language and using the basic ingredients of rhythm and voice, WAI make 100% modern Maori music. Their name means 'water' and their music is just as refreshing, though enriched with emotion, soulful melodies, and flooded

with complex rhythms. Their unique sound features singing in traditional style, vocal patterns and harmonies. Organic, natural beats - human breathing, nature and animal sounds - are incorporated with indigenous percussion and action sounds including poi body slaps, foot stamping and hand clapping. Traditional Maori music is chant like, progressing in sections, telling stories about life. WAI  utilise their ancestors methods, linking the sounds of today with the rich culture and traditional heritage of the Maori people. WAI have been nominated for BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.
