GUERNSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
'Bohemian Rhapsody'
Guest Conductor :  Roger Coull
Smetana
     Overture to 'The Bartered Bride'
Kodaly        Dances of Galanta
Dvorak        7th Symphony in D minor
This July, the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra has plucked Roger Coull
from his usual seat leading the orchestra and given him the conductor's
baton to celebrate his 50th birthday. The GSO takes the audience on an Eastern European tour with Kodaly's 'Dances of Galanta', via the rustic Czech themes of Smetana's Overture to 'The Bartered Bride', which established the composer with the reputation he has today. The second half of this journey will bring you to the 7th Symphony by Dvorak, who was inspired by his great friend Smetana.  Dvorak intended this symphony to be 'capable of shaking the world' whilst conveying the movement towards the independence of his homeland at that time.  The Credit Suisse Concert Series attracts a large
audience - Don't be disappointed - buy your tickets now!
Tickets £14, £12.50, £9, £4 restricted view, students half-price

WAI - Aotearoa/New Zealand
Passionate ambassadors of the Maori language and using the basic
ingredients of rhythm and voice, WAI make 100% modern Maori music.
Their name means 'water' and their music is just as refreshing, though
enriched with emotion, soulful melodies and flooded with complex rhythms.
Their unique sound features singing in traditional style, vocal patterns and harmonies. Organic natural beats - human breathing, nature and animal sounds - are incorporated with indigenous percussion and action sounds including poi body slaps, foot stamping and hand clapping. Traditional Maori music is chant like, progressing in sections, telling stories about life. WAI
utilise their ancestors' methods, linking the sounds of today with the rich culture and traditional heritage of the Maori people. WAI have been nominated for BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.
