Conduct Disorders
Conduct Disorder Oppositional Defiant Disorder Books
There are many causes of behavioural problems, but I will here focus on Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. See the Children &Young People's Mental Health page, and links below for other issues.
Conduct Disorder is characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of dissocial, aggressive or defiant conduct - which repeatedly violates the property and personal rights of others.
It (or ODD) may co-exist with ADD, and it is common for the diagnosis to be confused with ADD. In ADD, there is not normally the premeditative behaviours or anger that is seen in Conduct Disorders. 30-50% of all children diagnosed with ADD though, may also have Conduct Disorder (CD) or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Examples of behaviours which may be seen in Conduct Disorder are:
fighting |
bullying |
cruelty |
destructiveness |
fire-setting |
stealing |
lying |
truancy |
running away from home |
frequent & severe temper tantrums |
disobedience |
argumentative |
blames others |
easily annoyed |
use of weapons |
disrupt & abuse others |
excessive profanity |
vandalism |
deliquency |
criminal activity |
They are often seen by others as being spiteful and vindictive people, who always blame others.
Broadly similar to Conduct Disorder, (and may display many of the above listed behaviours) and primarily characterized by markedly defiant, hostile, disobedient, disruptive behaviour - but ODD does not include the more extreme forms of aggressive or dissocial behaviour which results in seriously violating the rights of others. Up to 30-40% of adults with ADD, are thought to have had ODD during adolescence. ODD may occur before Conduct Disorder, and may start in the pre-school years (Conduct Disorder usually occurs in older children).
