Towns and Villages Our nearest main towns are Questembert, Vannes and Redon. The nearest main touristic villages are Rochefort-en-Terre, Malestroit and La Gacilly, of which all are architecturally interesting. Rochefort-en-Terre is the most beautiful, with its chateau high up on the hill and with its winding streets and outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. Market days are held in many villages in the area, the largest being in and around the old market place at Questembert on Monday mornings. The Rivers Ther are many rivers in the area including La Claie, La Vilaine, L'Oust, L'Aff and our local river L'Arz which is 3 minutes away by car. L'Arz is in the first category of rivers and one can find many fish including trout, perch, pike and eels. Fishing permits can be bought at the local villages. The Nantes-Brest Canal is nearby and is also good for fishing. Walking and Cycling There are numerous pedestrian footpaths in the area. La Voie Verte, which used to be the old railway line, is the largest in both width and length and spans the country between Ploermel and Questembert. This footpath, which meanders through forests and upland plains, is also ideal for cyclists. We are surrounded by forests, one of which borders the property. Two minutes from La Pierre Longue there is a broad footpath ideal for both walkers and cyclists. The Sea The nearest beaches are thirty minutes drive away. The swimming is good, the beaches sandy and clean. For those who like sea fishing the coast is ideal. Many shellfish are also to be found. The islands in the Golfe du Morbihan are just a boat ride away. My husband, Alan, has lived in the area all his life and is a walking information bureau on all things maritime, so if in doubt please ask. Prehistoric There are several prehistoric sites in the area. These are not all marked on the maps, so please ask us for directions. The megaliths of Monteneuf are half an hour away and the famous standing stones of Carnac are 45 minutes away. Days Out The nearest family attraction, ten minutes by car, is Le Parc de Prehistoire, where one can find dinosaurs and cavemen living side by side in the ancient slate quarries. It is both an educational and fun day out for all the family. A little further away is Branfere zoo which has over 2000 animals housed in beautiful botanic surroundings. There are aquariums at Vannes and La Croisic. A little further North, at Lizio, an amazing display of working models can be seen. It is a must for both parents and children alike. Many associations produce musical concerts at Rochefort-en-Terre, Questembert, Malestroit etc. The fest noz (Breton dances) are often organised at the week ends. |
