Radio Scotland

Radio Scotland broadcast on 242 metres medium wave from a converted
lightship, "The Comet" from 11.50pm, Hogmanay 1965 until closedown on August 14th 1967.
It was feared that the ship would not be on air by new year as it, and the tug that was towing it, had met heavy weather. She had been fitted out in St. Sampsons
Harbour, Guernsey in the Channel Islands, amid great local speculation.
It started in the North Sea, off the Scottish coast near Dunbar, but later
moved to near Troon (on the West coast) - broadcasting as it was being towed
around the north of Scotland!
The DJ's on the ship included the Scottish actor Paul Young (recently seen in the
Para Handy series on BBC 1), Richard Park (now programme director at Capital),
Stuart Henry (who moved to Radio One and then Luxemburg. He recently died of
multiple sclerosis. Actually Stuart Henry got seasick, so all his programmes
were recorded on shore.)
Jack MacLaughlin is now on radio somewhere in the south of England, Alan
Black was on Radio One (with Bob Harris) in the early days and Jimmy Mack is
still to be heard on (BBC) Radio Scotland. Others are Bob
Spencer, Ben Healey and Tony Meehan.
Radio Scotland published a magazine, "242 magazine" of which there were 10
copies.
Special thanks to "Anon?", Scotland, and "Offshore Echo's Magazine." for information
