Welcome all to Stark Raving Sane, (probably) the biggest Rosencrantz and Guildenstern website on the net... Following the fates of Hamlet's interchangeable minor characters R+G, this is very sweet, very quoteable, very funny and ultimately very sad film of the Tom Stoppard play. It's not for everyone, but if you do like it then you're in a happy minority. And we should be friends. Never heard of it? Check out wikipedia and imdb, borrow a copy from your local library and come join the sanity.

Updates and News

12-March-2007 Long time since an update, huh? The best new thing that's happened to the site is a good, kind citizen has sent me a transcript of the film, which I am working on uploading as we speak. My top link this month is BrightLights “Nine Hamlets” – a witty rundown of every on-screen Hamlet ever (though not ours), as written by maybe the only English critic in the world to dislike the play. The Melbourne Theatre Company are putting Rock and Roll on in Australia,Harrogate Dramatic Society are putting on R+GaD, with Guildenstern played by a woman. You can also see it in Gainesville all through March. Meanwhile, for those of you lucky enough to be in New York on March 14th, I urge you to go see the hilarious and brilliant Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, performed with full orchestra.
Tom Stoppard is on the South Bank Show on Sunday March 16th at 11:15pm (ITV1) as part of a program about the revolutionary 1968.He’ll be accepting his Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence at the horribly overpriced Oxford Literary festival at the beginning of April. The next time you’ll see Gary Oldman, unless you are currently stalking him, will be July 18th when The Dark Knight comes out, a film likely to be completely overshadowed by tragic recent events. You can get your Tim Roth fix a little sooner, when The Incredible Hulk comes out June 13th. The question is, of course, who would win if Batman and the Hulk went head to head? On the web, there’s of a new production of the play. And another And despite having given up Livejournal for Lent, scouring the web for interesting things has made me break it accidentally. Not once but five times, only once in a useful way – 268 screencaps here

28-December-2007 I've dug up a whole lot of new videos, and thanks to everyone who has sent me something to list here. Their submissions can be seen in the fanfic and pictures sections.
24-December-2007 Tom Stoppard is taking part in a panel discussion in San Francisco in January - the details are here, but get in quick - tickets go on sale at the end of December, and last year they went in three hours...The Plastic People of the Universe, who are at the center of Stoppard's Rock and Roll, are about to release a dvd of concert footage et al. Finally, I am very excited to promote ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD, a little indie sequel to the play set in New York, and featuring vampires, mafiosi and the Holy Grail. Check the imdb page, but I found the most info I could here at Gothamist. Definitely one to get excited about.
22-December-2007 A lot of news. If you live in Austin, then the play’s on tomorrow. Details here. Rock and Roll, Tom Stoppard’s new play that comes highly recommended from me, is still on Broadway at the Jacob’s theatre – until March 2 2008. Go check it out! Literature Study has a new essay about Tom Stoppard’s early work, and and I’ve found a good blog about The Real Thing, which is just highbrow enough to be interesting, but written in a way simple enough for me to understand. In actor news, Tim Roth’s new film, Youth without Youth is out. Most people's response looks something like this: Francis Ford Coppola is directing again! This film looks gorgeous! But we have absolutely no idea what was going on…it tells the story of a language professor hit by a bolt of lightning and made young again. People keep using words like “existential” and “quirky”…it looks like it might be our sort of thing. Anyway, here’s an interview about it. Most people think it’s a bit lukewarm, including Total Film, but here’s a really enthusiastic review to balance it out. Gary Oldman has signed up for a new motion-capture version of A Christmas Carol. It’s being directed by Robert Zemeckis (Mr Beowulf and Polar Express), who has sworn off live action films, focusing on new 3D technology. He will be playing multiple characters…I wonder which? meanwhile, on Livejournal, there is a new Tim Roth community, and 31 Gary Oldman icons can be found here. And I wish you all a happy whatever you celebrate at this time.

Oxford Uni dramatic society are doing Arcadia as part of their summer tour (Interested? Check here. Confused? Arcadia is one of Tom Stoppard's other plays...) We're al most ready to go here, I'm just checking all the links out and making sure I haven't broken too many laws, or annoyed anyone who I'd actually like to enjoy the site by breaking the complicated, scary, unwritten rules of credit etiquette. I think I've succeeded, but feel free to correct me...

If you're reading this, it means you're reading the site. And if you're reading the site, it probably means you like either the play or the film R+GaD. Either way, I like you already. As I've only just cranked this site up, there are no updates. And as far as I'm aware, no news either. Maaan, I really have overused the word "either" in this one. I'm still working on this - I just had to put it up, firstly so I've got something to show people when begging for affiliates/submissions, and secondly because a friend has bet me I'll never finish it. Well, this serves you right, eh?

About the Site

After seeing, and loving the film, I just knew there had to be a good, obsessive fan site somewhere on the web. Or not. This is it. I had to make it myself. It's mainly dedicated to the movieverse, but it's not _that_ different to the play...have fun, behave and contribute where I've missed stuff. This is a work of love, and this town is big enough for both of us. If you've got a site on a similar topic, we should definitely be friends. I am a HTML hack - this site is probably not css certified, xhtml 1.2 a-OK or anything of the sort. It just seemed to work last time I looked. I hope you have as much reading the site as I did putting it together.

About me
Hi, I'm your quixotic, ergophobic, obsessive and thoroughly charming hostmistresspersonthing. You may call me "your royal highness" or "lord and master", I'd like that. Or you can call me Ninquelosse, which is not as demeaning for you, but still not the name my mother gave me. Incidentally, I also answer to Anna, Emily, Mortimer (don't ask...), Dr Evil, The Great Holy Jaffa Cake and "oi you". Stick with Ninquelosse, it's less confusing that way. Or Nin...ninke...niquo...if you can't spell it. I don't mind. I'm not a vegitarian, although people keep mistaking me for one. I prefer my food to my friends, and my films better than both :). A friend made the mistake of recommending this to me in early 2006. Since then, she has sorely regretted her action: I've watched my friend's DVD, my DVD, the library video and a different friend's re-edited film with the naughty bits taken out each several too many times. It's my dream to see it on stage, and my nightmare to perform it on stage. And the nightmare of the people watching. I have played Hamlet though...Yes, I am this annoying in real life. No, I'm not affiliated to anybody affiliated to people who are affiliated to people who actually had anything to do with the film itself. Screamail me or check out my Bebo if you are nosy/mad/brave enough to stand more of me talking about me. You could even make me very happy by reading my movieblog and one true love, Cinecism.

Want to help?
Oooh, good on you. The first thing this site has a visible lack of is iconry, wallpaperfluff and the like in the pictures section. The writings section is also sort-of skimpy: accepting fan fiction, reviews, intellectual dissections, comedy and whatever else, even stuff connected to the film/play by a few degrees (stuff on Mr Stoppard, Hamlet, Waiting for Godot e.t.c. If you're interested in it, then chances are someone else here is too). If you're more of a webby person, then two links I couldn't find for the site were fanlistings for the play or Tom Stoppard himself. You might want to give those a go. Alternately, I gave up the will to live before getting around to making a page for Richard Dreyfuss. Aside from that, anything you can think of. Want to transcribe the Tragedians' music? Post instructions to make the puppets? Produced a braille version of the text? Want to make a new banner? Want to review one of Tom Stoppard's other plays? Found a decent link I don't have? Or a relevant site you want me to plug?
One large idea I'll need help on is having a play/filmography on the people pages, with a short commentary (i.e. what sort of role they play in the film, whether it's any good // what the play's about, how far it's recommended e.t.c.). I'm not sure any of us has watched/read enough to do it on our own.

Anyway, accepting praise, constructive criticism and -hey- death threats below.
