RECLAIMED LAND AT LA MAISONETTE / TRAFALGAR QUAY

22 October 2007 and the reclaimed land at the new La Maisonette Quay ( Trafalgar Quay by States) still lies idle and not earning any money for the States. This work was originally due to be completed by December 2003. Below is a letter I wrote to public Services on 4th feb 2007 and their less than satisfactory Reply.

A little bit of History
" La Maisonette" Was the name of the rock/reef on which the reclaimed land now stands. Why it should now be called "Trafalgar Quay" is beyond me! It was known as " La Maisonette" apparently because of the small house originally standing on it belonging to the Harbour Master. It should now be "La Maisonette Quay".

) Reclaimed land at La Maisonette. On the 27th March 2003, the States agreed on the Marina development at St Sampson's Harbour, which included the reclaiming of the land on the reef known as La Maisonette. The work for this project was due to start in May 2003 and be completed by December 2003. It is now February 2007 and this reclaimed area still lies unfinished and unused and I presume has not produced any income for the States since the project was started. Who is responsible for this at a time when this island is trying to earn as much money as possible from as many sources as possible to improve the economic situation we now find ourselves in? The apparent overspends on this project alone, whose original cost was set at £3.4 million by the States, has claims by the contractor running at nearly £7 million . Could you please provide an explanation as to why it is not complete? Whether there is any current earning from it? Whose responsibility the cost of completion lies.

ST SAMPSONS MARINA
Reclaimed Land at La Maisonette/ Trafalgar Quay There are a number of contractual issues which remain outstanding between the States of Guernsey and Miller & Baird which have prevented earlier usage of this land. As you will appreciate, the details of this must remain confidential.
This land was made available for boat lay-ups during 2006/07 winter but there was insufficient interest and it was not necessary to use it.
Notwithstanding this , discussions are underway with the environment Department with regard to the development of the land.
Signed William M Bell, Minister.

OCTOBER 2007 It has since been learnt that in fact the development referred to in the letter from Deputy Bell above, referred to the building of boat showrooms, offices and parking on the site. An application was made by Sun Sport for Showroom , offices and parking to the environment department, but this was turned down.
THE LAND STILL LIES IDLE.
