TOURETTE SCOTLAND

Formerly known as

The Scottish Tourette Syndrome Support Group

 NEWSLETTER - August 2002

Spring Meeting – The spring meeting was well attended.  Dr Dorothy Taylor, our medical adviser, gave an excellent presentation on the importance of multi-diagnosis and John Davidson was available for discussion, following the viewing of the documentary ‘The Boy Can’t Help It’, in which John took part.  Thank you to all that attended.

Adventure Weekend at Galashiels – The adventure weekend was a great success.  Children, siblings and families all benefited.  Together they enjoyed a visit to Jedburgh Deer Park, Art & Crafts, Music Therapy, Inflatable Fun and more!  John Davidson’s influence on ‘living with TS’ was of great benefit to a lot of the children suffering from TS.  Greg, from the documentary and his family also joined everyone for the weekend.  It is intended to hold the same event next year.  Thanks to Children in Need for funding this event and to John Davidson and his colleagues for hosting the weekend in the community centre where John is employed.

Fundraising and Donations – We would like to thank all that have been fundraising and donating to us over the year, we are extremely grateful for every penny, which is used towards supporting sufferers and their families.

We continue working to raise public/awareness through a number of sources, including major consultation meetings with Health Services and The Scottish Executive, as well as local services.

Web Sites of Interest:

http://www.sotherebooks.com/tsa/html – A site set up by Andrew K Stone, a writer with TS.   If you like to write journals, short stories, memoirs or poetry, then Andrew would like you to post your work here.

The intention is to build up a growing network of writers with TS who can share and learn from each other.

www.Latitudes.org/acntoday.html – ACN Today is a free e-newsletter exploring non-toxic treatments for autism, TS, ADHD and learning problems. There is information on this site about the Feingold Diet, which we know from one of our members can be very successful.   If you have had successful results with this diet, please let us know.

http://sequinn.topcities.com – A site set up by an IT student who has been designing software to help diagnose autism, TS and related disorders and would like input from sufferers.

www.calvert-trust.org.uk – A great organisation for outdoor activities, in a caring and supporting environment, a great holiday for all the family.

Points to note:

DLA (Disability Living Allowance) – it is very important to seek skilled help when completing a DLA application form and not to try and complete it by yourself.  Contact your local CAB (Citizen Advice Bureau) or PRT (Princess Royal Trust).  They have experience in what must be included in the form and how things need to be phrased for a successful application.

Ritalin – Holidays Abroad – A drug licence needs to be obtained when travelling abroad if taking over 900 mg of Ritalin.  For more information contact the Home Office 0207 273 3806.

Funding – Contact us if you are applying for funding, it is possible that we can give you a reference to support your application.
