I agree - if you only buy one book about TS, maybe it should be this one. It's factual, accurate (I trust the author!!) and up-to-date. Has lots of info about recent studies too. Please don't be put off by Amazon's statement that they "expect to be able to find this title within 4-6 weeks". I ordered it on 12.8.00, and they posted it the next day! (I received it on the 15th)

Passing For Normal A Memoir of
Compulsion
Amy S. Wilensky
"I am crazy. But maybe I am not. For most of her life, this thought haunted Amy Wilensky as she watched her body do things she couldnt control, repeatedly twitching and contorting into awkward positions. Her mind lurched and veered in ways she didnt understand. While Amy excelled in school and led an otherwise normal life, she worried that beneath the surface she was a freak, that there was something irrevocably wrong with her. After graduating from college, she happened upon a book and it was then that she realised the might have Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder." I loved this book - a must buy!!

"A Guide for Parents, Relatives, Loved Ones, and Sufferers of Tourette Syndrome. More than just a medical text, this book also presents the personal story of the author and her search for diagnosis and treatment for her children. Living with Tourette Syndrome does much to dispel the myths about Tourette's and provides sensible advice, comfort and hope for anyone affected by the disorder." Another good one.

Twitch and Shout A
Touretters Tale
Lowell Handler
"Oliver Sacks MD (who wrote Awakenings) writes: Tourettes Syndrome is an extraordinary condition, which may drive the mind and body to movements, thoughts, and feelings which may seem incomprehensible and alien even to those who have it. It has, as is often remarked, a mind of its own. Twitch and Shout gives us a most vivid description of what it is like to spend ones life with such an alter ego. Lowell Handler writes with enormous honesty, humor, and gusto.

Hi, Im Adam A Childs
Story of Tourette Syndrome
Adam Buehrens
"Adam is 10 years old and has TS. He wrote and illustrated this book because he wants everyone to know he and other children with TS are not crazy. They just have a common neurological disorder. If you know a child that has tics, temper tantrums, unreasonable fears, or problems dealing with school, you will find this a reassuring story." This book tends to focus on Adam's anger and rage, and talks very little about his tourette syndrome.

Does Your Child have a Hidden Disability?
Jill Curtis
Synopsis (from Amazon)
For the large number of parents who find themselves worrying about whether there is
something not quite right with their child, and finding it difficult to pinpoint just what
is wrong and where to look for help. "Invisible" disabilities are among the most
distressing of all childhood problems. The range of these is wide and overlapping symptoms
can confuse even the experts. Although the nature of the handicap may not be understood at
first, the symptoms which are visible are most distressing to both parent and child. And
often, as parent come to terms with the family crisis, in a desperate attempt to blame
somebody for what is happening, the marriage itself may be in jeopardy. This is not a
medical book but instead focuses on the social and emotional impact of these disabilities
on the whole family. What are these hidden disabilities? The most common are - Attention
Deficit Disorder, Auditory Attention Problems, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia,
asthma, depression, allergies, learning difficulties and speech and language problems.
This book should help you find your way through the maze of conflicting advice and offers
support to those parents who have a child who is not "quite right".

The Explosive Child : A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, 'Chronically Inflexible' Children
"Offers techniques for helping "chronically inflexible" children, shows how brain-based deficits contribute to these problems, suggests ways to calm things down". According to Amazon reader reviews, this is a popular book!
Kitty Killian from Holland writes: The Explosive
Child by Ross W. Greene is a great book. It gives a totally refreshing look on how to
handle inflexible (rigid, tantrum-throwing or just never-co-operative) children, like many
TS-children are. Greene makes you aware of how to read the signs of a child getting into
such distress, that communicating by words is not possible anymore - and teaches the
parents to get ahead of the point where the child explodes. (Sorry but my English is not
too neat here). His approach is simple: have all these explosions where you forced the
child to comply with your wishes helped him, and improved his behaviour? If not, try this
approach, and decide before every new conflict heats up, if you find the subject so
important that you are willing to risk the child exploding, or if you find it a matter for
compromise (thereby teaching the child that such a thing is possible and how to do it) or
whether you might just as well let the child have his way. It certainly works with us, it
has cleared up our minds over how to handle in many an awkward situation.

The
Out of Sync Child - Recognizing
and Coping With Sensory Integration Dysfunction
Carol Stock Kranowitz
Recommended by many, this book has helped explain a great deal about my son
Kitty Killian (from Holland) writes: The Out-of-Sync Child
by Carol Stock-Kranowitz is a valuable book. Many kids with TS must also have SID, is my
opinion after reading up on it: Amazing that here in Holland nobody ever once
mentioned SID to me. Apparently my sons hyper- and hyposensitiveness to touch, for
instance, trigger or coincide with many of his tics.
