Guernsey's Deputy Chief Minister could be in hot water after opening a press conference with a racist joke…. Representatives from all the island's media and other officials were in attendance at the airport conference room but there wasn't single laugh when Deputy Bernard Flouquet delivered the offensive punchline in a joke about Barack Obama. The Minister for Public Services has since issued an 'unequivocal apology' saying he has the 'utmost respect for President-Elect Obama and intended no offence whatsoever.'
The press conference was actually intended to update the media on plans to refurbish the airport runway…. £85million is what public services will be asking for, early next year, to get the project done. That doesn't include extending the runway though, PSD don't think that's essential. Commerce and Employment aren't so sure- they want to see a report on the consequences. States Members will get to have their say in the December States Meeting, though whether the runway becomes top priority won't be decided until March. Between now and then politicians will also discuss a new Les Beaucamps school and upgrading our mental health facilities. That way, come March, members will have voiced their views on all three and they can look at prioritising the different projects. Treasury Minister Charles Parkinson hopes islanders also get involved in the debate.
Plans for Guernsey's deposit protection scheme are being released to the public today…. Proposals have been fast-tracked by a technical group, which includes members of the GFSC, Commerce & Employment and the Association of Guernsey Banks. As announced last month, the scheme will cover savings of up to £50,000. It will apply to both resident and non-resident individuals but not businesses or corporate customers of banks in the island. It's also been confirmed the scheme will not be retrospective.
